Outside Looking In
This week I made a guest appearance on the Mormon Expression podcast, in an episode titled "Outside Looking In." I was joined in the podcast by evangelical bloggeress Bridget Jack Meyers of ClobberBlog, as well as host John Larsen and regular panelist George. Among other things, we discussed the evangelical countercult movement, our experiences with Mormon culture, and the things we find compelling and/or problematic about the Mormon Church. Thanks to John for having us on!

I just finished listening to the interview. I have to say that was the best interfaith discussion I have ever listened to. Great stuff.
Thanks! :-)
Great job! You and Ms. Jack both made some excellent points.
Thanks, chanson! :-)
It was fun Chris. I thought we made a pretty good team.
I visited Wheaton the other day, and it made me think of you. I actually have thought about starting my PhD at Claremont when I'm done here (2011), although it's more likely I'm going to do my MSLIS in this area next. And hey, I understand you know my buddy Nick Frederick over there at Claremont? His wife was my best friend at BYU and my matron-of-honor at my wedding.
I consider you very much a kindred spirit in all this, even if your journey has led you out of evangelical Christianity. If we get the opportunity to do a panel again in the future, I'm down with it. :)
Hey Jack,
I agree, it was fun, and we do make a good team. :-) I'd say you should totally come to Claremont, but I'll be honest: a library science degree is probably more employable in the long run. I'm crossing my fingers and whistling past the graveyard.
Yeah, I do know Nick and his wife. They mentioned to me in class just the other day that they had listened to the podcast, and they knew you at BYU. They said you sound like you've mellowed a lot since then. :-)
I was struck by how much our stories coincide, even though we've ended up in different places. Doing this again in the future would be fun! Thanks and good luck with your school plans,
-Chris

Yeah, and it looks like I probably have semi-permanent part-time work here at TEDS. Hard to want to give that up in a year. I may do both the MSLIS degree and the PhD, as that would probably help me get an even higher-paying curatorial position in the long run, and I could someday switch to teaching if a position becomes available. We'll see.
Either one will probably be enough for me to make a name for myself writing academically though.
They said you sound like you've mellowed a lot since then.
They were both in my Latin 111H class for Winter Semester 2001, my very first semester at BYU. I was 18 when the class started. That was also the class where they first met.
So yeah, I have mellowed out quite a bit since they first knew me. It's been over nine years, and a lot of my youthful naïveté and black-&-white thinking has faded.
Here is one of my wedding albums with photos of Julie as my matron of honor. Alas, I don't think I got any photos of Nick on the big day.
